The King of the Mountain race, arguably the most gruelling foot race in the world,
involves starting from a central point in the town, scaling to the top and down the other
side of rocky Mt. Cooroora via a steep arduous track, and greeting the judge across a
finishing line in Reserve Street.
The field is limited to fifty runners, who compete in various categories.
The record, which has been unbroken for eleven years, is currently an incredible
twenty two minutes .
The event, which is organised by Cooroy/Pomona Lions, is accompanied by an all-day
carnival of market stalls, live music and contests of skill including thong and egg
throwing. The festival and race attract thousands of visitors each year.
